Those Forty Eight Tidbits About Me

You might call it Hoskins 101.

I call it: The Me Post. Since I've never cared for MeMe...

But whatever it's dubbed, here's the 48 questions and answers all about me. Enjoy.

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
No. My parents wanted to name me David, but in the end Michael prevailed. My middle name is William, and that's specifically a family tradition on my dad's side. That is the first name of my dad's dad, and he was named after his own grandfather (my 2nd great grandfather) who was William Oliver Hoskins. The family name of William dates back to our ancestrial roots in the 1700s, I've discovered in my genealogy research.

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
I don't remember. But wanna know something a little embarrassing on that topic? I may have shed a tear or two in a movie theater back in the day (circa 1990) when Home Alone was showing. Remember, that scene at the end where the elderly neighbor finally reunites with his son and family? Yep. Very moving, it is. (sniff sniff)

3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING?
I'm a reporter who has what can only be described as chicken scratch. But I can read it. (No, I'm not a doctor prescription pad ghostwriter). I do like my signature, though. I think I reinvented it somewhere around the 8th grade and have been signing it that way ever since.

4. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCH MEAT?
Rarely will I turn down any lunch meat. But if I had to choose, I'd go with the post-Thanksgiving ham that is always left over and provides ample lunchtime sandwiches for days... mmmm.

5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
Nope. But we have a black lab, who my parents refer to as "the granddog." We also used to have a cat, and she was affectionately known as "the grandcat."

6. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON, WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU?
Well, if my present self managed to get a flux capacitor to travel back in time to meet a younger version of myself, I'd like to think so. Or, maybe I'd just be trying to prevent myself from fading away...

7. DO YOU USE SARCASM A LOT?
What do you think?! No, I don't... (sarcastically stated)

8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS?
Uh... hold on while I go look in the mirror. (Minutes later): No clue. I don't see anything in there. UPDATE: My mom informs me that I had my tonsils taken out before I was 2 years old. Doctors said at the time they were so bad they were like those of a 70-year old man. (Old Man Baby Hoskins??)

9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP?
No. For some reason, I'm not fond of the bounce-back part of it. But, I'd parachute out of a plane without a problem (even though I chickened out from doing this about 10 years ago, and looking back I regret not taking that leap of faith.)

10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL?
Snap Crackle Pop, baby!

11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF?
That I don't do. Like being able to slide them on, off and hit the ground running!

12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG?
Strong, Like Bull. Or so they say. Somewhere.

13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?
Rocky Road.

14. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
Whether they are wearing an insulin pump or not...

15. RED OR PINK?
Blue. Wait, that wasn't a choice...? Well, fine. Never mind then.

16. WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF?
Sometimes, my attitude isn't as bright and shiny as I'd like it to be.

17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST?
My grandma (mom's mom), who died when I was 16.

18. WHAT IS THE TECHNIQUE THAT YOU NEED TO WORK ON THE MOST?
Well, my dog walking technique could use a little work... if that's what we mean by "technique." Honestly, I have no clue what this question is asking.

19. WHAT COLOR SHOES ARE YOU WEARING?
I'm not wearing shoes. My socks are black with gold toes. But the shoes that are in the other room are brown loafers. There's also some shiny black ones around somewhere in a closet.

20. WHAT WAS THE LAST THING YOU ATE?
Gourmet cheese, because I'm a cheese slut. And also some all natural peanut butter that my mom bought from Nino Salvaggio's in St. Clair Shores.

21. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?
My Spotify is currently playing Roll On, by Detroit's Kid Rock.

22. IF YOU WERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE?
That one color with a name you've never heard of, and think might have been made up, but you could swear the shade is just Blue. But I wouldn't want to be that crayon as just described if it doesn't actually look like Blue on the piece of paper I'm using it on... because that's happened before. But even worse? When it's not a crayon, but a paint brush and your canvas is a white wall in your house and it turns a hue you just can't stand... Yep. That color.

23. FAVORITE SMELLS?
Late September and early October in Michigan, when there's a mix of warm and cold air, burning leaves, apples and cider and pumpkin-preparation in the air.

24. HOW IMPORTANT ARE YOUR POLITICAL VIEWS TO YOU?
Very very important. And what drives me nuts are people who are straight-party voters who cast a ballot based on the party, not the quality of the person wanting to hold an office.

This is the halfway point... still with me?!?! Hello? Bueller, Bueller...?

OK. Here we go. Second half...

25. MOUNTAIN HIDEAWAY OR BEACH HOUSE?
Hmmm. That's a tough one. I don't want to be stranded like Tom Hanks in Castaway. But then again I do like the idea of being all Robinson Crusoe. So, I vote for Margaritaville.

26. FAVORITE SPORTS TO WATCH?
College football, hockey, or major league baseball.Oh, and I'm from Detroit - so, go Wings and Tigers and Go Blue!!!

27. HAIR COLOR?
My dog has black hair with white sprinkled around... oh, not my dog? You wanted my hair color? My hair is light brown.

28. EYE COLOR?
My eyes are brown, but they aren't as brown and heart-warming as my Riley Dog's eyes. Just sayin.

29. DO YOU WEAR CONTACTS?
Occasionally, but not as often as I used to because they irritate my eyes more these days.

30. FAVORITE FOOD?
Seafood. Specifically, shrimp. And that cocktail sauce from St. Elmo's in Indy - magnificent!

31. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?
Depends on the movie, the mood, and sometimes even the season... (i.e. Christmasy movies just lead to more pushy happy endings.)

32. LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?
Resident Evil, nine gazillion and fifty four. Because I once played the video games and liked them, and so that has carried over. Plus, we need to be ready when the Zombie Apocalypse begins.

33. WHAT COLOR SHIRT ARE YOU WEARING?
White. Because I can.

34. SUMMER OR WINTER?
It's currently winter. I prefer neither summer or winter. Fall is my favorite season (see above about smells of the season...)

35. FAVORITE DESSERT?
Cheesecake. Banana or strawberry. Mmmmm.

36. STRENGTH TRAINING OR CARDIO?
I don't do either, but need to start - probably both. I'd say cardio. Because again, when the zombies arrive, we need to be able to outrun them more than pick them up and throw those flesh-eaters.

37. COMPUTER OR TELEVISION?
YouTube and Netflix. Think about it.

38. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING NOW?
Justice Sonia Sotomayor's memoir, My Beloved World. Oh, and the Bible - because I always seem to be reading that one.

39. WHAT IS ON YOUR MOUSE PAD?
I don't use a mouse pad anymore... the last one I used had Marilyn Monroe smiling at me.

40. FAVORITE SOUND?
There's something very appealing about a roomful of BG meter, CGM and pump beeps... #justsayin

41. FAVORITE GENRE OF MUSIC?
Classic Rock. Thanks to my dad, who taught me to love this music when I was a young teenager. And Tom Petty is the best. #freefallin'

42. WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME?
Hey, home is where the heart is. So my heart has always been with me. I'm not IronMan, after all.

43. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
I think I've perfected the art of coffee drinking... but I'm not sure that's a talent. So, no. I'm pretty bland. But I plan to train myself to play a musical instrument from my nose, like they did in that one Star Wars movie.

44. WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Detroit, Michigan. In a hospital room. By my mom.

45. WHERE ARE YOU LIVING NOW?
South of Indianapolis. Moved there nine years ago for a daily newspaper job.

46. WHAT COLOR IS YOUR HOUSE?
It's a Homeowners Association compliant color. I swear.

47. WHAT COLOR IS YOUR CAR?
Red. Like a fire engine.

48. DO YOU LIKE ANSWERING 48 QUESTIONS?

I like answering questions, and asking them, but 48 does seem like a lot of Qs... I did it, though. And I hope you've enjoyed my answers!

Thanks to Cherise for starting this meme over at DSMA.

Oh, and my lovely and wonderful wife has also done her own 48 Things post on her blog, Laughter & Tears! So make sure you go read and comment there!
